Anyone else giving anything up? For the benefit of non-Catholics, Lent is symbolic of the 40 days before Easter Jesus spent in the desert and was tempted by Satan. We give up a temptation (such as chocolate, or we cut back on TV time) and try to spend more time in prayer and read the Bible more. Y'know, I think Doug and me may be the only Catholics on this site... that's a scary thought, I fell all alone now. I'm giving up biting my fingernails and trying to be more aware of people around me.

Yes, it's supposed to be sad but there's always that feeling of hope, y'know?
My dad and I are doing the Triduum again this year. Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. It's beautiful, even though it's so somber. The Masses are different because usually, at the end of the service, the priest says, "The Mass is ended; go in peace to love and serve the Lord." and then there's the final ending song. But for the Triduum, the altar and church are stripped bare of decoration, it's dark and insence-y, and at the end the choir just keeps singing until everyone is gone. It's a symbol that, in the three days until Easter Sunday, the Mass never ends, but you are in God's presence until He rises again.
Then the three hour Easter Sunday Mass! It starts out real gloomy, but halfway through the lights go on and it gets all happy! You can really feel God's presence, it's as joyful as if Jesus really HAD risen again!
Whew, a bit long-winded. I always get that that when I talk about religon, though.

Indeed. Doug told me a funny story about his experience with the Triduum.
His family ALWAYS stays until the end of the last song. Well, they didn't realize that, in the Triduum, the singers continue until everybody is gone, to further the symbolism that the Mass has not ended. So, Mr. Ehlen is standing there with them, saying, "It'll be just a few more minutes guys... they're almost done..." and the choir was getting impatient after about twenty minutes, because it is hard to repeat "Kyriie Eleison, Christe Eleison, kyriie eleison...." for that long. Well, it had been about half an hour when they finally got the idea and left.

Yup... I bet the choir still remembers them. This year, as the Ehlens file in, they'll whisper to one another, "Oh great, there's the 'standers' again... OK, this time we pause in the song until they leave and pretend it's meditation."

'S all right... meh. As for religion, Atlanta recently got a new archbishop. The last guy wwasn't real popular in my family, and I must admit some of his decisions were silly. He encouraged people NOT to vote for John Kerry, and that's ok because everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I think politics and religion shouldn't be mixed when everyone has different beliefs and there's so much potential for hurt feelings. The new guy (his name escapes me at the moment) is better with the whole "tolerance" thing. And, pertaining to Lent, my fingernails are AWESOME! Sadly, I use them for sin by scratching my brother... I am soooo ashamed.
