Lent...
The 40 days of Lent represent the 40 days and nights Jesus spent fasting in the desert, when he was tempted by the devil. To commemorate this, Catholics give up a temptation, fast from meat (and sometimes fast altogether) on Fridays, and try to spend more time in prayer. Lent ends on Holy Thursday, the feast of the Last Supper. Then comes Holy Friday, when Jesus died. Finally, there is Easter Saturday; then Easter Sunday.
We're allowed to eat fish on Fridays, I'm not sure why it isn't considered meat. The three holy days are not Holy Days of Obligation (when you HAVE to go to church) so it's all the more good for you if you go. We didn't go yesterday; my mom was really tired, and it seemed a better mission to help her out.
We don't go on Easter usually, because it's completely packed with all the people who only go to church on Easter. The way we see it, we go every other Sunday, so we can skip the holidays.

40 days of temptation to the 40 days of lent, that's cool! So, what happens if you mess up on what you give up?
The days of obligation, interesting, what happened to the people who were Christians back when Jesus had just died on the cross and there wasn't such a thing as days of obligation? What happens to those people? You've struck up my interest, I'm curious lol

Well, (it's a little late now, but here's my answer) when Jesus had JUST died, Christianity wasn't an organized religion yet. And a lot of the occasions for which HDoO (Holy Days of Obligation) are celebrated hadn't happened yet. The Ascension of Mary, the Feast of the Holy Family, Feast of All Saints, etc.
If you mess up on what you give up, it's not a sin... it's just kinda shameful for you - Jesus went without eating or drinking for 40 days, and you couldn't even keep a much simpler promise?
This is fun, keep the questions coming! I'm learning from this too.
Waaah..... my beautiful fingernails! I didn't bite them (much, I haven't done it in days) so I cut them... and I CUT THEM TOO SHORT!!!! It's as if I had never stoppped biting them! It's because I haven't needed to cut them in 7 years... *shame*

The 40 days when Jesus was tempted. I don't remember the exact passages, but he did go out into the desert for 40 days and nights and Satan tempted him with promises of power. Jeses prevailed, and I think this is what we celebrate. I'm afraid that I missed a few years of Sunday school, and I couldn't tell you why we put so much store in the 40 days - but I've grown up with it, and the time of meditation and sadness before Easter makes the actual holiday even more real to me. ;D

why would we be mad at you for that? We simply want to show you LOVE not hate When Jesus saw the multitudes of those who did not follow him, he wasnt mad at them, he was filled with compassion. Any christian who does not take Jesus's veiw point in this is sinning. Soad, we will never hate you for that, but instead we will love you more
